Blueberries are a deliciously juicy berry that my whole family enjoys. Every morning I give my boys a small bowl to munch through while I’m packing lunches and preparing breakfast. In the winter I started to notice that they aren’t as juicy and they go off after two days, so I decided to buy them frozen. This was my a-ha moment! Not only did they taste delicious, they lasted for ages and they saved me money - win-win!
Here’s a list of my favourite foods to buy frozen instead of fresh:
1. Spinach - Spinach has a mild taste, making it a great addition to smoothies, pastas, stir-frys, omelets and soups.
2. Berries - Berries aren’t cheap in the off-season. There’s nothing worse than spending a fortune on berries and then seeing them go moldy in the fridge two days later. I stated buying them frozen in the winter but they are also a delicious treat in the hotter months too. Frozen berries go great with yogurt, smoothies, pies and even on their own.
3. Broccoli - Frozen broccoli saves you a ton of mess, I usually end up with green bits everywhere. Frozen broccoli can goes great in omelettes, stir frys, soups and stews. It can even be steamed or boiled and used as a side dish.
4. Cauliflower - As with broccoli, frozen cauliflower can save a ton of mess. It can also be used wonderfully in soups, stews, pastas, boiled or steamed and used as a side dish.
5. Sweet Potato - I’ve worked on my potato peeling speed but nothing beats the ease of grabbing sweet potato from the freezer. It can be roasted, steamed or mashed and used as a delicious side dish. It also blends well into baked oats and smoothies.
6. Banana - This is one of my favourites. I always have fresh bananas on hand for my boys but just before they start to go off I peel them and chop them into chunks to freeze. They are perfect for smoothies or home-made ice cream.
